11 April 2006 Top media executive Sly Bailey pays tribute to ORT Some 300 people from the business and banking worlds gathered in Londons West End to hear one of Europes most powerful female executives, Sly Bailey, outline her vision of the newspaper business at the annual British ORT Business Breakfast. Listed by Fortune magazine among the 50 most powerful businesswomen outside the United States, Ms Bailey is Chief Executive of Britains largest newspaper publisher, Trinity Mirror, whose 11,000 employees produce 240 regional titles as well as mass market national tabloids. Its a great honour to be invited to speak at this event, Ms Bailey said. ORT creates real opportunities in places where opportunities are rare. It enables children to acquire the vocational skills that quite simply open the door to a better future. So Im very proud to be able to lend my support to this wonderful organisation. Ms Bailey was introduced by Lloyd Dorfman, Chairman and Chief Executive of Travelex, the company he founded in 1976 and which is now the worlds largest non-bank foreign exchange business. This is Mr Dorfmans first year as host of the British ORT Business Breakfast, having assumed the mantle of BBC Chairman Michael Grade CBE. I have long been a tremendous admirer of the effective work that ORT does across 60 countries, Mr Dorfman said. I know how complex and challenging it can be to run a global organisation. Mr Dorfman noted World ORTs involvement in the Jewish Community Secondary School (JCoSS) project, whose fruition will be Britains first non-denominational Jewish secondary school. Its a tremendously exciting project to which ORT will contribute greatly, he said. Sir Brian Pitman was among the crowd that filled the art deco dining hall at the Sheraton Park Lane Hotel for what the organiser, British ORT Vice President Michael Naughton, described as one of the premier networking events of the year. A former Chairman of Lloyds-TSB, Sir Brian is Senior Advisor to Morgan Stanley and lists Virgin Airways and Carphone Warehouse among his directorships. Joining him were representatives of top flight firms including KPMG, UBS, JP Morgan Private Bank, IDT, Wizz2u and Aurum. World ORT Director General Robert Singer and Sir Brian Pitman British ORT Executive Director Ivor Levene OBE said the Business Breakfast had been a success in more ways than one. The event raised 60,000 ($105,000) for ORT projects, which is superb; but it also, very importantly, spread ORTs message of educating for life to people who would not normally come into contact with us, Mr Levene said. Mr Levene paid tribute to Mr Naughton: The event is so ably led by him his drive and enthusiasm for the Business Breakfast in particular and for ORT in general sets an example to us all.
