ORT has started two new projects in Sri Lanka and India to assist the tsunami affected communities. ORT, in partnership with ORT India and BJS, will participate in the Andaman and Nicobar Education and Rehabilitation Project to enhance the overall quality of education in the A&N Islands in the Bay of Bengal. The India tsunami program will include computer education, school administration, accreditation programs, management training, aptitude assessment and evaluation, teachers training and social service awareness programs. The generous donors responsible for funding these projects include: JDC, Jewish Coalition for Asia Tsunami Relief, Jewish Federation of Greater Washington and private donations. ORT, in partnership with the local NGOs, Shilpa Children’s Center and Sumitravo will provide training for social workers and volunteers working with tsunami affected children and workshops on trauma counseling. The Sri Lanka Tsunami Assistance project will also provide vocational training for women in embroidery, sewing, cooking, and cosmetology and design to improve their income-generation skills in partnership with the local NGO, Women’s Development Federation in Hambanthota, one of the hardest hit tsunami areas. Goods produced by the women will be sold through Shilpa’s craft fairs and marketing center.
