World ORT Update 11 February 2002 An audience of lawyers, property investors, and bankers mixed with those from the media, entertainment and e-commerce gathered to hear the Director General of the BBC recount his rise in the broadcasting industry, the influence of TV on football and the future direction of the BBC. (from left) Robert Singer, Director General of World ORT, Greg Dyke, Director General of the BBC, Jon Benjamin, Executive Director of British ORT and Sir Maurice Hatter, Chairman of the World ORT Board of Directors Now 18 months into his appointment media mogul Greg Dyke addressed the largest ever audience at a British ORT Business Breakfast. More than 320 guests attended the annual event, this year held at the Park Lane Hotel in Londons Piccadilly. The event raised more than 50,000 for ORTs activities around the world, which provide schools and vocational training for tens of thousands of children and adults from disadvantaged communities in Russia, South America, Israel and beyond. Breakfast Chairman Michael Naughton thanked the sponsors of the event, WiZZ2U, PST (International) Limited and Henderson Investors Limited, as well as nearly two dozen corporate table hosts. With your help, he told the assembled guests, young people with great ability can be given the opportunities for a better life through an ORT education, Naughton said. David Dein, Vice-Chairman of both the Football Association and of Arsenal Football Club, introduced Mr Dyke, the main speaker at the event. Friends for many years, Mr Dein spoke of his dealings with Greg Dyke before and leading up to the establishment of the Premier league and the TV deals which helped to bring this about. Framed photographs showing the planting of ORTs flag at the North Pole on ORTs 120th Anniversary were presented to Greg Dyke, David Dein and Michael Naughton.
