27 February 2004 Nine ORT students from Moscows Jewish School #1311 will represent the State of Israel during the London International Model United Nations (LIMUN), taking place 27-29 February at the London School of Economics. The ORT students, aged between 14 and 16, will be accompanied by their school principal Gregory Lipman. LIMUN seeks to simulate the UN system and bring together the various elements of the UN from the Security Council and the Human Rights Commission to the General Assembly committees. Delegates represent the member states and offer the views of a variety of nations on a range of topical, relevant and thought provoking issues. The objective of LIMUN is to seek solutions to various world problems such as human rights, protection of the environment, economic development, disarmament, refugees, war and peace. In seeking solutions to the problems the young delegates from all over the world develop true international cooperation. Conference participants are permitted to represent any UN member nation, and as Jewish youngsters the ORT students felt it important to represent the State of Israel. The agenda includes a special conference on the Middle East and an International Court of Justice. During their time in London the ORT students, who will return to Moscow on 4th March, will spend a day at ORT House meeting ORT lay leaders and professional staff and will visit a London synagogue and Jewish school.
