30 January 2004 The ORT Renzo Levi High School in Rome was inaugurated on Monday 26th January 2004. Prior to the inauguration a Gala Dinner, with guests of honour Franco Frattini, Italys Minister of Foreign Affairs; and Ehud Gol, Israeli Ambassador to Italy, was held by the Rome Jewish Community for the members of World ORTs Executive Committee who were in the city for the Executive Meeting. At the Gala Dinner in Rome : Robert Singer, Director General of World ORT (left); Mauricio Merikanskas, Chairman of the Board of Directors; Rees Feldman, Chairman of the Executive Committee; Franco Frattini, Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs; Justice Richard Goldstone, President of World ORT; Sir Maurice Hatter, Deputy President of World ORT; Prof. Giacomo Saban, President of ORT Italy. The ORT Renzo Levi High School opened in September 2003 in refurbished premises, donated by the Lazio Regional Government, near to the citys main Synagogue. The school was formerly housed in a 16th century building owned by the Jewish community on the opposite side of the citys Tiber River from Jewish community buildings. The new school premises provides an upgraded technology department and is equipped with additional Computer Studies laboratories and state of the art language laboratories. Members of World ORTs Executive Committee were guests of the Rome Jewish community at the Gala Dinner where Justice Richard Goldstone, President of World ORT, gave a brief address describing the activities of World ORT before presenting the Foreign Minister with a plaque. Prof. Giacomo Saban, President of ORT Italy, was honoured for his commitment to and involvement in the establishment of the new school. Rees Feldman, Chairman of the Executive Committee, officially opened ORT Renzo Levi, while Mauricio Merikanskas, Chairman of the Board of Directors, paid tribute to Ferruccio Sonnino, former National Director of ORT Italy the most veteran member of ORT – for his many years of service to ORT.
